What pen/paper do you use?
For sketchbooks, I've been using the Kuretake Zig pen. All my sketches are straight-to-ink without any penciling, because I find that it loosens me up for later, more technical work. In my finished comics and graphic novels, I use blue lead pencils to make the sketches, then I use Faber Castell PITT pens to draw the finished comic. I color my work either on the computer or with watercolors. I dig Canson's Illustration paper, which I use to make my own sketchbooks.
Why do you call your baby Pal/Palindrome?
It's not easy to be related to an autobiographical cartoonist. I try to be respectful and kind when including my friends and family in my work. When Pal was born, I knew that I would want to draw him and share stories about him with readers, but I didn't want to subject him to Internet name recognition, or expose him to future embarrassment (I mean, as much as a mom CAN mitigate embarrassment...). Because I'm writing about him and he appears in my comics, I've chosen an Internet code name: PAL. It's short for "Palindrome," because his birthday was a palindrome date. It's not his real name, but it's cute.
When is your next book coming out?
Something New came out May, 2016. I have a children's book that I illustrated, Margaret and the Moon, by Dean Robbins, that was released Spring 2017. I also illustrated a book, Love, Penelope, by Joanne Rocklin, which came out March 20th, 2018.
I'm working on another children's book, You are New, to hopefully be released in 2018. Finally, I'm in the process of making more graphic novels: "Kid Gloves," which is about deciding to have a kid and getting pregnant, "New Kid," which is about high school, and a few more projects that are still under wraps! These'll be along, hopefully, in the next few years.
Can you draw me a...?
Commissions are closed at the moment, but I have been known to open commissions to my Patrons on Patreon! Or you can follow me on Twitter, where I will occasionally open commissions, and sometimes solicit photos for extras to appear in crowd scenes in my comics.
